Following a visit to Basis HQ, we caught up with co-founder and former electrician Julyan Collett to hear firsthand about their long-awaited Basis Smart Panel — a product set to change the face of home energy management.
Now officially available in New Zealand, the Basis Smart Panel is being sold exclusively through Powerbase, with installations carried out by certified electricians across the country. Over 7,500 panels have already been contracted, valued at more than NZ$25 million.
Julyan shared how the panel replaces the traditional switchboard, giving Kiwi homeowners the ability to monitor and control their energy use in real time via the Basis Home app. From automating appliances to reducing electricity bills — with potential annual savings of around NZ$1,200 — the system aims to make smart energy management simple and accessible.
Julyan explained, “For electricians, this isn’t just about smart tech — it’s a new platform that changes how we work. It improves fault finding, adds customer value, and sets sparkies up with future-ready tools.”
Basis has certified over 85 electricians to date, including well-known names such as PCI, French Electrical, and Ocean’s Electrical, with many more undergoing training.
The panel has passed more than 100 rigorous certification tests, making it fully approved for use in both New Zealand and Australia. Backed by investors including Icehouse and GD1, Basis has set its sights on a global rollout, with trials planned in the UK, Europe, and Asia later this year.
